picture1The Good Neighbours Awards celebration is an annual event hosted by the Association of Neighbourhood Houses of Greater Vancouver (ANH) to honour volunteers who have made significant contributions to their neighbourhoods and communities. For the past twenty-two years we have been celebrating neighbours and neighbourhoods at a special annual dinner and awards ceremony.

Each Neighbourhood House or Camp identifies the Good Neighbour they wish to recognize. We also accept nominations from across the Lower Mainland in order to honour one special volunteer whose activities span many neighbourhoods with the Lower Mainland Good Neighbour Award. Seven years ago, we added a Youth category to recognize secondary school students from Vancouver, the Tri- Cities and South Surrey who are already volunteering at their schools or in their neighbourhoods. In 2003, we included a Corporate Category to recognize and honour a company for significant and long lasting support of neighbourhood house activities.

Our annual signature event is the Celebration of Good Neighbours, an opportunity for the Association to recognize and honour those who have made a significant contribution to
their neighbourhoods through their volunteer activities.

picture3This year, on Wednesday November 14th, we will be celebrating our Good Neighbours event. Awards will be presented in four categories: Youth Awards to secondary school students; Neighbourhood House Awards to nominees from the individual Houses; a Corporate Award to a company which has supported neighbourhood house initiatives and an overall Lower Mainland Award, to someone
whose volunteer activities have benefited many neighbourhoods. We solicit nominations for the Corporate Award from the Houses and the Lower Mainland Award from the community at large.

Youth Awards: Each secondary school in Vancouver, the TriCities and South Surrey is asked to select one student who has demonstrated their commitment to their school/neighbourhood/community through their volunteer activities, to receive a Good Neighbour Youth Award. Award recipients include: volunteer tutors, service students, mentors, peer tutors, local and district student council members, volunteer interpreters,
youth office workers, leadership program volunteers; a number of award recipients were involved in provincial, national and international volunteer initiatives.
