General Description
Gordon Neighbourhood House has been serving the people of the West End since 1942. Providing over 60 years of meaningful, relevant and diverse activities and services for children, youth, families, seniors, individuals, groups and the general community
The growing population of babies and toddlers in the West End has generated a flurry of activities for both parents and tots. Creative Playtime is a drop-in time for children to play in fun and creative environment. We also have the Mobile Lending Library operated by the West Coast Childcare Resource Centre visiting creative playtime twice a month. Saturday Family Place is a drop-in time for children and their parents and/or caregivers. For older children our after school program is now licensed and parents can receive provincial subsidies. The Homework Club runs twice a week and has been fully booked from its first day.
Employment services at Gordon House include the Adult Employment Program, provides career planning assistance, job search techniques and interview skills. The program provides access to computers and the internet. Assistance is available for the preparation of resumes and covering letters. Youth Search, the youth employment program, aids youth ages 15 to 24 to gain the necessary skills to enter and maintain employment.
Neighbourly help defines the essence of a Neighbourhood House and we are grateful for the involvement and commitment of our volunteers. Our neighbour to neighbour helpers generously donate their time for such programs as organizing our Hot Lunch program twice a week, enabling over 25 trips and picnics and staffing the Attic Thrift store which subsidizes many programs and services. They provide help as receptionists, ESL instructors, assist seniors with their income tax, lead classes, assist with special events as well as a multiplicity of other programs and services. Volunteers are the heart of the house.
We provide transportation to our adventurous seniors who love exploring and have traveled to Tofino, Salt Spring and Hope. There are also a number of special events each year that keep local seniors involved and active during the year, these include lunches every week. The list goes on and on.
