Mount Pleasant Neighbourhood House

General Description

Mount Pleasant Neighbourhood House operates in one of Vancouver’s most diverse neighbourhoods where the very Canadian challenges of immigration, poverty and social exclusion come together at the community level. At the same time we have a wealth of talent and energy in our participants and volunteers (from our board members to occasional helpers at our multicultural dinners) who are working to meet the challenges: of finding work in a new land, living on a low income, raising children in a community identified as high risk for children (Dr Hertzman et al, University of BC www.earlylearning.ubc.ca) and to grow old with dignity in their own home.

Mount Pleasant Neighbourhood House is the centre of activity for this multicultural and diverse community. Mount Pleasant Neighbourhood House (MPNH) has been providing programs and services to all age groups in this East Vancouver neighbourhood since 1976. The House brings together families, community members, businesses, health and social service agencies and community resources to offer a wide range of supports and opportunities to children, youth, adults, seniors and families within Mount Pleasant.

Mount Pleasant Neighbourhood House, like many community agencies, has to meet growing needs of our neighbourhood members with budgets reduced by provincial government cuts. The last two years have seen many changes at the House as we position ourselves to meet the needs of the community. We continue to adapt and change to meet the challenges of reduced funding, more need, and changing dynamics in the community. We will continue to welcome new people into the House and to say goodbye as people move on.

At the heart of the House are our volunteers, they help with everything from the governance of the House – we have a volunteer Board at both the House and Association levels – to the delivery of our programs, serving our community meals, and are critical to our fund raising.
